What are acid-free packaging materials?
Acid free packaging materials are scientifically milled boxes and
paper supplies specially designed for storing textiles for long
term. They provide a neutral environment for textiles to rest in
–allowing them to age uniformly and at their own rate. Newspaper
is a good example of why acid-free packaging materials are so important.
Newspaper is a highly acidic, low quality paper. As it ages, a chemical
reaction occurs, releasing gases that cause the newspaper to become
yellow and discolored. If textiles are stored in acidic environments,
i.e. regular cardboard boxes, plastic bags/containers, uneven aging,
discoloration and deterioration can occur. Gowns stored in regular
cardboard boxes or boxes with only acid-free liners often develop
staining and discoloration everywhere the gown touches the sides
of the box. Only 100% acid-free boxes and paper supplies will protect
your gown.
Will my gown be in a sealed box?
No, we do not seal our boxes for two important reasons. 1) If moisture
is trapped inside the box without any way of escaping, it will deposit
in the form of mildew or fungus onto the gown. If left undetected,
brown spots and holes may develop in the fabric. 2) It is important
that the gown is inspected regularly. Your gown may be stored for
more than twenty years, awaiting the next bride in your family.
Anything precious requires a certain level of maintenance to insure
your gown remains in a usable condition. If the box is sealed, inspecting
the gown is impossible. Upon delivery of your gown, we will open
the box, show you your gown, and give you instructions on how to
care for it from that point on.
Will you be sending my gown to the main
land to be preserved?
No, we clean and preserve all our gowns ourselves, on Oahu. We do
not send our gowns to the mainland or have other companies do them
for us.
How long have you been in business?
We have been caring for wedding gowns and special occasion wear,
exclusively, since 1989. We clean and preserve approximately 500
gowns each year.
